Where to Stay in Rio de Janeiro

No Rio area is exempt from theft, so choose by how you plan to move around. This page compares five areas by beach access, metro stations and the van stops for Christ the Redeemer.

  • ★ Hand-picked, top-rated tours
  • ⛰ Train, vans and safety explained

How to choose an area

Pick the area by what you will do most. If you want the beach, stay near Copacabana or Ipanema. If the statue comes first, look at where the vans leave. If you want the old tram and the art streets, look at Santa Teresa. This guide names no hotels and gives no room prices. It compares areas by location only.

Two points apply everywhere. No area is exempt from the city's theft risk, and no reliable ranking of "safest" areas exists. Read the safety page before you book. Second, there is no metro station called Cristo Redentor. You reach the statue by train, by van, or on foot, as the getting there page explains.

The areas in detail

What each one offers a visitor.

Copacabana

The beach is the main argument, and the van to the statue leaves from Praça do Lido, between Belfort Roxo and Ronald de Carvalho streets. The metro is a walk away. The van stop is listed for 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Being near the sand is a plus, but it is not a safety or a price guarantee. See the beach page.

Ipanema and Leblon

These areas combine the beach with four named metro stations: General Osório, Nossa Senhora da Paz, Jardim de Alah and Antero de Quental. There is no van stop listed in these areas, so you take the metro to a stop or a taxi to Paineiras.

Largo do Machado and Catete

Here the metro and a van stop sit close together. The van leaves in front of the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Glória, about 2 minutes from the station. Times are listed from 7 a.m. on one page and from 8 a.m. on a newer one, so check the current start before you plan an early morning.

Centro

A third van stop opened at the Catedral Metropolitana, Avenida República do Chile 245, on 23 September 2026. It runs from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the nearest station is Carioca. This does not make every address in Centro a short walk from it.

Santa Teresa

The neighbourhood is known for its tram and its art streets. The tram costs BRL 20, as listed by the state operator. The tram status and the walk from your lodging need a separate check. See the Santa Teresa page.

Practical tips for booking

Questions to ask before you pay.

Check the walk to transport

Measure the walk from the room to the metro or the van stop on a map, and judge it by day and by night. Do not assume a street is fine to walk after dark.

Use a taxi at night

The German Foreign Office, in its advice dated 22 October 2026, favours a taxi after dark. A lodging near a taxi rank or a main road helps.

Ask about the details

Ask the host about noise, minimum stay and the cancellation terms. This guide has no data on them for single streets or properties.

Plan the Carnival dates early

The Grupo Especial parades are on 7, 8 and 9 February 2027. If you travel then, book early and read the weather and best time page.

Where to stay in Rio: frequently asked questions

Where is the best area to stay in Rio de Janeiro?

It depends on your plan. Copacabana and Ipanema suit a beach stay, Largo do Machado and Centro are near van stops for the statue, and Santa Teresa suits the tram and the art streets. No reliable ranking of areas exists.

Which area is closest to Christ the Redeemer?

No area is directly beside it. The statue is reached by train, by van or on foot. The van stops are at Largo do Machado, Copacabana and, since 23 September 2026, the Catedral Metropolitana in Centro.

Is there a metro station for Christ the Redeemer?

No. The metro operator lists no station by that name. Use the metro to reach a van stop or the train station area, then continue as the getting there page describes.

Which areas are safe at night?

No area is exempt from theft and robbery, and the guide cannot name a safe walk at night. The German advice favours a taxi after dark.

Should I stay in Copacabana or Ipanema?

Both are on the beach and both are named in the German advice for theft by day. Copacabana has a van stop at Praça do Lido, which Ipanema does not, while Ipanema has four named metro stations.

How much does a hotel cost?

This guide gives no room prices. Compare the total price, the location and the cancellation terms on the booking site you use.
