Parque Lage at a glance
Parque Lage lies at Rua Jardim Botânico 414, in the Jardim Botânico district of Rio de Janeiro, below the Corcovado. The park publishes opening hours of 08:00 to 18:00. General access to the gardens is free under the national park rules, though this does not cover separate events or any services inside.
Two things need to be clear before you plan a visit. First, the palace (the Palacete) is closed for restoration, and the announced end of works is early 2027. That is a plan, not a confirmed reopening date. Second, the park is also the starting point of the trail to the statue, which has its own checkpoint and its own earlier cut-off time.

What is open and what is not
Garden and palace are two different things.
The gardens
You can walk the garden paths and see the fountains. The photo above shows the courtyard with the Corcovado rising behind it. Do not plan your visit around the palace, the café or the pool courtyard. The palace is closed, and you should not count on the courtyard during the works.
The palace and the art school
The Palacete has housed the Escola de Artes Visuais since 1975. The park site states that the building is temporarily closed for restoration. A restoration notice from May 2025 gave early 2027 as the planned completion.
Café and pool courtyard
The café may not run as usual while the works continue. Do not count on a breakfast stop or a photo in the courtyard. If you want to eat, plan a meal elsewhere in the neighborhood.
Rio tours that include Parque Lage and the Corcovado
Guided city days, Corcovado combinations and hikes, with live prices and availability.
The trail from Parque Lage to the Corcovado
A long, steep hike, not a stroll.
Time and effort
The park authority describes steep, physically demanding sections and up to 4 hours from Parque Lage to the Corcovado. It does not recommend the trail for children under 10 or for people with no hiking experience.
Entry times
The trail checkpoint takes its last entries at 15:00, earlier than the garden closing at 18:00. After the park gate closes you have at most one hour to leave the grounds. That does not allow a late climb.
Registration at the checkpoint
The park protocol provides for a short risk and rules form at the trail guard post, with basic details and a phone number of one group member. It is filled in on the spot, not online.
The upper section
The newer Paineiras to Corcovado trail opened on 3 December 2024. It is 1.15 km long with a climb of 260 m, rated moderate, takes about 45 minutes and is free. Those numbers describe only that upper section, not the whole route from Parque Lage.
Paying for the statue
The trails are free, but the statue area is not. Access to the statue is ticketed even if you walk up. The hike guide covers the route and the ticket amounts, and tickets explains the options.
Which plan fits you
Three ways to use the park.
Garden only
Come between 08:00 and 18:00, walk the paths and the fountain garden, and leave when you like. This costs nothing under the national park rules and needs no checkpoint.
Hike to the statue
Arrive in the morning and pass the checkpoint before 15:00. Allow up to 4 hours to the Corcovado, plus time at the top and the ticket for the statue. Plan how you will come back down: on foot or by transport from the top.
Statue without the hike
If the trail is too much, skip the park as a starting point. The getting there guide compares the train, the vans and a taxi to Paineiras.
Safety and practical tips
Be realistic, and neither alarmed nor careless.
Go in daylight, in a group
The German Foreign Office advises hiking in nature parks in a group, on marked and busy trails, because of robberies. A March 2026 press report quotes a residents association about thefts and robberies around the Lagoa and Parque Lage area. This is not a statistic for the trail itself.
Nearby
The Botanical Garden, founded in 1808, is close by. It has no general visitor parking. The Lagoa lake is also nearby. See things to do in Rio for these and other stops.
Before you go
Read the safety guide, bring water and wear shoes with grip. Check the weather, since rain and cloud change both the trail and the view.

Can I have breakfast at the café?
Do not count on it. The café and the courtyard may not be open during the works.
When must I start the hike?
The trail checkpoint takes its last entries at 15:00. The hike can take up to 4 hours, so start in the morning.
