The hike from Parque Lage to the statue

The trail starts in the Parque Lage gardens, at Rua Jardim Botânico 414, and climbs through forest to Paineiras. From there the new upper trail leads on to the Corcovado. The park names steep, physically demanding sections and up to 4 hours from Parque Lage to the Corcovado.

This is not an easy stroll. The park does not recommend it for children under 10 or for people without hiking experience. Plan for a full morning, carry water and decide before you start how you will get down.

Route and times

What to expect from the gate to the summit.

Parque Lage gate and checkpoint

The garden gate opens at 8:00 a.m. and the park closes at 6:00 p.m. The trail has its own checkpoint with an earlier cut-off: the last entry is at 3:00 p.m. At the checkpoint, the park protocol provides for a short form with basic details and the phone number of one group member. It is a registration on site, not an online reservation.

Through the forest to Paineiras

The route climbs steeply in places and passes Paineiras, where the vans and the train also stop. Stay on the marked path. Navigation apps can suggest shortcuts that lead off the route, so follow signs rather than the phone.

The upper trail

The Paineiras to Corcovado trail opened on 3 December 2024. It is 1.15 km long, gains 260 m, is rated moderate and takes about 45 minutes. It is free. These numbers describe this upper section only, not the whole hike from Parque Lage.

Do not walk the road

The park protocol does not allow pedestrians on the Estrada do Corcovado. Use the marked trail and do not treat the paved road as a hiking option.

Guided trips to the statue

If you prefer not to hike alone, these tours include transport and access to the monument, with live prices and availability.

What you pay at the top

Park pages, 2026. Two park pages list slightly different amounts, so confirm the current price at the ticket counter.

The trails are free, but the walk alone does not give access to the viewing platform. Tickets for walkers are sold at the train ticket office at the top. Reduced rates apply only to the listed categories, so do not assume that a foreign visitor qualifies. The ticket office hours for walkers are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Since 3 August 2026 the escalators at the monument are out of service. The number of visitors at the same time is cut by 50 percent, whatever way you arrive, and walkers are affected too. Above the second level, 80 stone steps lead to the statue. Read the Corcovado page for details.

Safety on the trail

Hiking in Rio needs a plan. Nothing here is a safety guarantee.

Go in a group

The German Foreign Office, in its advice valid since 14 October 2026, recommends hiking in nature parks in groups, on marked and busy paths, because of robberies. That is a general warning for the region, not a statement about the trail alone.

Local reports

A press report from 13 March 2026 quotes a residents' association about thefts and robberies around Lagoa and Parque Lage. Keep valuables out of sight and carry only what you need. If someone demands your belongings, do not resist.

Daylight and timing

Start early, well before the 3:00 p.m. cut-off. After the park gate closes you have at most one hour to leave the grounds. That is not a permission to climb late.

Leave no trace

Do not feed or chase wildlife and take your rubbish with you. Drones are banned at the Corcovado. Do not leave the marked paths.

Christ the Redeemer hike: frequently asked questions

How long does the hike take?

The park names up to 4 hours from Parque Lage to the Corcovado. Your time depends on fitness and stops. The upper section from Paineiras alone takes about 45 minutes.

Is the hike free?

The trails are free. Access to the statue is not, and the walk does not replace the entry ticket sold at the top. Listed amounts for 2026 are in the table above.

Do I need a guide?

No guide is required for the marked trail. The park does not offer its own guiding service, so a guide would be a private arrangement. Hiking with others is the practical safety measure.

When is the last time I can start?

The trail checkpoint at Parque Lage takes the last entry at 3:00 p.m. The park itself closes at 6:00 p.m. Start much earlier to have time at the top.

Is the hike suitable for children?

Can I take the train down?

Yes. The park pages list an optional train ride down at BRL 37 or BRL 35, sold at the ticket office at the top. Check the current price and timetable before you go.
